If you visit Japan, you’ll no doubt see a group of people raising their beer or alcoholic beverages and hear them say, “Kanpai!”.   Kanpai is a popular Japanese expression that is equivalent to “Cheers!” and is used before you start drinking.

Please note that kanpai is commonly misspelled as kampai.  You can view my blog post on the Japanese alphabet to learn more about the letter n before a p.

The funny thing is, there’s a popular sushi and Japanese steakhouse restaurant where I live and it’s totally spelled wrong! “Kampai” instead of Kanpai. Food’s still great nevertheless!

There’s a similar saying in Chinese, where we say “Gan bei!” In literal translation, it means “dry cup.” What does that mean for us? Drink up ’till your cup is dry! Food + Drinks + Friends = FUN!

@Nina LMFAO. That’s funny! and… “Food + Drinks + Friends = FUN” is right! My FAVORITE thing to do in the whole world is to go out with friends, enjoy food, some drinks and some silly / crazy conversations that will raise some eyebrows. =D NOTHING is better than that! City or the country, doesn’t matter! As long as there’s laughter.
