The paintings below are part of the Warrior Collection. I decided to use red paint for the background, to symbolize the violent aspect of the warrior's way of life. To counterbalance the blood and the war, I painted white Japanese calligraphy to symbolize wisdom and dignity.
Here are simple descriptions of some of the Japanese calligraphy used in this art collection:
Samurai: Tremendously skilled swordsmen and warriors.
Bushidō and the Bushidō Code: Bushidō means “The Way of the Warrior”, the unwritten code of conduct for the samurai warrior of ancient Japanese, and includes: Gi (Justice), Yū (Bravery), Jin (Benevolence), Rei (Politeness), Makoto (Veracity), Meiyo (Honor) and Chūgi (Loyalty). To some extent, the Bushidō code is similar to the concept of chivalry.
Satsujinken Katsujinken: Satsujinken means the ‘killing sword’. The sword cuts through negative personality traits such as ego, desire, selfishness and ignorance. On the other hand, Katsujinken means the ‘sword that gives life’. Satsujinken Katsujinken is the concept that the sword that kills, is the sword that preserves life.
